22 Companies That Hire You To Write Book Reviews

Is spending hours in the bookstore your favorite pastime? Do you lose your mind if a friend eyes your bookshelf to check out your precious collection?

If the answer is yes my fellow book-lover, you will agree with me that it will be fantastic to get paid to read as much as we want. Book reviews are a fabulous way to earn rewards and enjoy what you do at the same time.

What Does A Book Review Job Involve?

A book reviewer gives their honest opinion on the written content, on the characters, the writer’s craft, the overall tone and the plot line. The review should help a reader understand if that book is meant for them.

A good reviewer will summarize a book in a concise manner without revealing any mystery elements. No spoilers, please ūüôā

What’s The Pay Like?

Standard reviews are between 200 to 350 words each. You may get paid anywhere between $5-$60 per review depending upon the site that you work for.

Not all companies pay in cash though. Many of them offer a free book as payment. If you are a blogger, many of these sites request you to publish your book review on your blog.

Here, I have rounded up a list of sites that pay for book reviews.

1. Kirkus

Experience Required: Required.

Country: Open to many countries

They are looking for English and Spanish language reviewers for their magazine section. Submit your 350 words review in two weeks after you are assigned your book. You would need to submit your resume with writing samples and reviewing specialties.

2. Online Book Club

Experience Required: Not mentioned. Possibly open to beginners

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

Submit your first book review. Your review is expected to be honest and quick. You will be eligible for paid review opportunities after that. The pay is around $ $5-$60 per review.

3. Book Look Bloggers

Experience Required: No

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

Applicants are required to be bloggers who publish content at least once a week and have a minimum of 30 followers. Refer to their guidelines to for each genre.

4. Contena

Experience Required: No

Country: Open to many countries

This is a popular job board for writers and they may have occasional openings for book reviewers. Just search the job board from time to time to see if they have openings for book reviewers.

5. Any Subject Books

Experience Required: Not mentioned. Possibly open to beginners

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

The pay may differ per assignment. You are expected to fill in the application and they will reach out to you if you are accepted. Currently they are not accepting any applicants at this time but it will not hurt to check back later on.

6. The US Review Of Books

Experience Required: Yes

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

Submit your resume along with your sample work and two professional references. They will provide you a byline. You are mailed monthly checks for your work.

7. Bethany House

Experience Required: No

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

Sign up for alerts. Your reviews must be posted on your public blog and also on a retailer website.

8. Chicago Book Review

Experience Required: Yes

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

To apply, send them your resume and published reviews to become a reviewer. You will be provided with a free book, a byline, and a bio for your work.

9. Civitas Press

Experience Required: No

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

They need you to submit your reviews either to your blog, a magazine or on Amazon. The books will be sent periodically to you for free.

10. Moody Publishers

Experience Required: No

Country: US and Canada

Once you are accepted, the book you select will be mailed to you in 7-10 days. Your review should be posted to your blog and a retailer website. Book reviews should be completed within 60 days of receipt.

11. Book Browse

Experience Required: No

Country: Worldwide

If your application is accepted, you are expected to submit one review per month. You will be paid for your review and will also receive a byline. If you are outside the US, apply only if you can access ebooks.

12. NetGalley

Experience Required: Yes

Country: Worldwide

Create a profile on NetGalley. The materials you are expected to review will be sent to your device. You may be often sent advanced titles to read and review. Go through their account recommendations to improve your profile

13. Blogging for Books

Experience Required: No

Country: Worldwide

You are required to be either an active blogger, a librarian, a retailer or involved in the media. Choose your book you want to review and submit your honest feedback. eBooks are available in the program.

14. NewPages

Experience Required: No

Country: Possibly US only

Send them a sample review. If accepted, they will send you review copies and you need to turn in the work within one or two months. You will be paid in free books that you can review. No cash payment as of now.

15. Springer

Experience Required: No

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

Register with them and you can review 10 copies online at once. You get a free book in return for your reviews.

16. Story Cartel

Experience Required: No

Country: Worldwide

Sign up on their site and download the books you want to review. You will receive a free book for your review.

17. Tyndale Blog Network

Experience Required: No

Country: Worldwide

You are sent a free complimentary copy of the book to review. Provide a constructive and honest review. You are allowed to review two books at once.

18. IndieReader

Experience Required: Yes

Country: Worldwide

Readers need to buy the book and post their reviews to Amazon and Goodreads. Professional readers include experienced writers, teachers, journalists and librarians.

19. RT Book Reviews

Experience Required: Not mentioned on the site

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

As of now, they do not need any reviewers but interested parties can still apply by emailing them. Email address is given in the link. Your application may be considered in the future.

20. Women’s Review of Books

Experience Required: Yes

Country: Possibly US only

Mail in your resume along with published samples and providing your areas of expertise. General pay is around 14 cents per published word.

21. Book Riot

Experience Required: No

Country: No restrictions mentioned on the site

Provide them two writing samples that are either published within the last six months or have not been published anywhere at all. Fill out the application form. If you are accepted, you will receive a revenue share.

22. Astronomy

Experience Required: Yes

Country: Possibly open worldwide. No restrictions mentioned on the site

Contact the editor and pitch your review idea along with your qualifications. You can find more information on their other requirements at the site.

Every site has its own guidelines for reviewing books. They may also have provided few sample reviews. Before applying, I suggest you familiarize with their format and submit your review. Once you are through, make sure your fabulous review is submitted within the deadlines.
